Describes how fossils are formed. From http://www.sheppardsoftware.com
Duration : 0:2:39
Many people are curious about the world and the organism that live within it. The earth is very old and many creatures have lived and died. We can learn from the creatures that have lived before by studying their remains. An interesting area of study is how are fossils formed and what is means to science.
Things that are new to them fascinate children. They have many questions and are captivated by things that are different from what they see every day. When they see an extraordinarily beautiful flower, they become intrigued by how it got that way and other interesting facts about the flower.
Adults, too, have curiosity about the unknown. In fact, some go into the fields of science like botany and geology to figure out the life of plants and rocks and study parts of the unknown for the rest of their lives. Some individuals can make great discoveries in these fields that help others to understand the natural world better.
One of the curiosities of the world is what happens to things when they die. It is true that cultures have different burial habits and rituals. It is said that like people, some animals such as elephants are evolved enough to mourn and bury their dead. Some rituals take care of the remains of people and creatures that die by burying and sometimes burning the bodies.
There are times when people lose their lives and they are far away from their culture. It could be the hiker who was caught in a mudslide or the mountain climber that happened to be on the peak that suddenly erupted with lava. Chance might have it that they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

It generally takes a great deal of chance for fossilization to take place. Usually, the person or animal that is buried in the mud would simply decompose like normal. However, if the mud contains the right amount of clay or tar and it covers the body sufficiently, it can harden and preserve the remains. The covering of the body protects it from the elements that would oxidize it and cause it to decay.
This can also happen to insects that get stuck in the sap of a tree. Under the right conditions, the sap can trap the bug and over time toughen and become petrified, which makes it as hard as rock. Of course, the insect will die but its body will be able to be studied years and years later in almost the same form as it was the moment that it died.
Museums often set up exhibits to explain to visitors the concept of finding the remains of people and creatures from long ago. Once one understands the idea of preserving and protecting things from the elements it is easier to comprehend how are fossils formed. Freezing is another way to obtain the state of fossilization. People will likely continue to try to understand and try to find uses for creatures who have been preserved in this rare form.

Kids are often fascinated by fossils, in fact these archaeological wonders are also loved by adults as well. A fossil is like a time capsule or a window into our planet’s past. It is hard to imagine that millions of years ago there was not a single human on the Earth, and all there existed was these ancient creatures. The information on fossils for kids, highlighted below, should be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about our planet’s history and past inhabitants.
To start with, it is useful to learn about how fossils are formed. Some animals and insects were buried quickly soon after they died, for example in a sandstorm, or by sinking in mud. With time, more sediment buried these remains, the pieces of the creatures that were not able to decompose, such as teeth and bones, were fully encased within the sediment.
After a considerable amount of time, and this is millions of years as opposed to centuries, the buried creatures bodies underwent various changes. The bone that once formed the skeleton slowly decayed, water that was infused with various minerals replaced the chemicals that were present in the bone.
The fossilization process typically involves the dissolving of the original bone minerals which are then replaced with other minerals. The result of this process is a rock-like heavier version of the original creature. A fossil has exactly the same shape as the original, but in a chemical sense it is actually a rock.
There are other ways in which a fossil can form, for example petrification. Petrification occurs when organic material is replaced with compounds such as silica, pyrite, or calcite. Wood is a substance that is often found in a petrified state. Some small organisms can remain virtually intact within amber, a hardened tree sap. It is believed that certain insects and plants can one day be brought back to life if their DNA can be extracted from remains encased in Amber.

An interesting fact, and one that is often overlooked, is that most of our planet’s ancient animals did not fossilize, they simple died and disappeared from history. It is suggested by paleontologists that only a very small percentage of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures have been identified through the fossil record.
Not all fossils are a result of the death of an animal, some actually give an indication of their behavior or habits. For example, in various places of the world, footprints of dinosaurs have been found. These impressions would have been made in conditions such as wet mud, and have then gradually filled with sediments which overtime have eroded.
The actual term “fossil” has it’s origin in the Latin word “fossilis”, meaning dug up. Today, all the knowledge that exists in relation to dinosaurs comes from the study of fossils. Information and facts on fossils for kids are too numerous to list here, fortunately it is a subject that is becoming more detailed with every passing year. New discoveries are being made all the time that change our understanding of what life was like on the Earth millions of years ago.
